A BSTRACT Gastroschisis is a congenital abdominal wall defect of rising global prevalence with established public health implications. Despite a growing body of research on its epidemiology and management, the online dissemination of gastroschisis-related scholarship has not been systematically characterized. This study aimed to examine the altmetric profile of gastroschisis research using Altmetric Explorer. A cross-sectional analysis with longitudinal assessment of temporal trends was conducted. Altmetric Explorer (Digital Science, London, UK) was searched using the keyword gastroschisis on February 19, 2026. All publication types with a valid DOI were eligible for inclusion, regardless of mention status. Primary outcomes included the Altmetric Attention Score (AAS), total and platform-specific mention counts, and source diversity. Secondary outcomes encompassed temporal patterns, geographic distribution, and audience demographics. Descriptive statistics were applied. A total of 793 scholarly outputs were identified, of which 582 (73.3%) received at least one online mention, generating 2739 cumulative mentions. Social media accounted for 80.3% of all mentions, with X/Twitter dominant ( n = 1970). Policy documents ( n = 123), clinical guidelines ( n = 80), and patents ( n = 53) collectively contributed 9.3% of mentions. Online attention was negligible before 2010, rose steeply from 2012, and peaked between 2019 and 2021. The United States dominated social media, news, and guideline activity, while Brazil contributed the largest share of policy document mentions (37.4%). The top-ranked article, a Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report on rising gastroschisis prevalence across 14 US states, achieved an AAS of 245, placing it in the top 5% of all altmetric-tracked research outputs globally. Sentiment analysis revealed that 84% of traceable mentions were positive or neutral-positive in tone. Gastroschisis research has achieved substantial and growing online visibility, driven primarily by social media and amplified by public health-focused reporting. Policy and clinical guideline engagement, while slower to accrue, represent durable translational pathways, particularly in Brazil, which carries a disproportionate burden of the condition. These findings provide a baseline for research communication strategies in neonatal surgery and birth defect epidemiology.
