A multidisciplinary approach plays a fundamental role in health care, as it allows professionals from various fields to share knowledge and jointly determine the best course of action for the patient. This study aims to discuss the importance of this integrated approach for the quality of care, clinical safety, and continuity of treatment. This is a narrative literature review conducted through searches of the PubMed database, considering articles published in the last five years, available in full in Portuguese or English, and relevant to the topic. The analyzed studies demonstrate that teamwork promotes interprofessional communication, improves treatment adherence, and contributes to shorter hospital stays and fewer complications. This integration proves particularly relevant in the management of complex diseases, such as tuberculosis, sexually transmitted infections, and infective endocarditis. In tuberculosis, the diversity of clinical presentations and diagnostic challenges require continuous monitoring and coordination among the teams responsible for treatment. For sexually transmitted infections, care should encompass diagnosis, treatment, prevention measures, counseling, and mitigation of sociocultural stigma. In infectious endocarditis, the involvement of different specialties aids in determining antimicrobial therapy and indicating surgical interventions. Furthermore, communication among professionals allows for the identification of drug interactions, consideration of the patient’s social determinants, and adaptation of care to their needs. It is concluded that a multidisciplinary approach contributes to safer, more continuous, and more patient-centered care by considering the individual holistically; strengthening interprofessional collaboration is essential to improve health outcomes.
