Autism / Depressed Mood / BA-A · Interventional Study
ClinicalTrials.gov · September 10, 2026
Early or partial results. Treat as a signal, not a conclusion.
This is a registered feasibility and acceptability study of behavioral activation adapted for autistic adolescents with below-average intelligence, a population comprising over 50% of autistic individuals but absent from prior depression treatment research. The trial is currently recruiting and has not yet reported results. The study will measure depression symptoms, behavioral change, and implementation metrics at baseline, post-treatment (12–13 weeks), and 1-month follow-up.
Interventional, Single Group, Open label, Treatment purpose. Autism, Depressed, Depressed Mood; age from 12 Years; to 17 Years. Intervention: BA-A. n = 18. 1 site: United States.

If completed successfully, this study may provide preliminary evidence that behavioral activation can be feasibly delivered and acceptably received in cognitively lower-functioning autistic youth with depression. Any efficacy signals would require confirmation in larger, controlled trials before changing clinical practice.
This is a recruiting feasibility and acceptability study with no results yet posted; it aims to establish whether a behavioral intervention can be delivered to an understudied population, not to prove efficacy.

Graded across the dimensions that decide whether you should act, each from what the source actually supports. There is no single score, and where a dimension was not assessed it says so.
What is missing. This record has no key findings. That is a gap in the analysis, not a judgement about the study.
Registry record from ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT07812870). This is a study registration, not published results. Lead sponsor: Stony Brook University. Recruitment status: RECRUITING. Phase: NA. Study type: INTERVENTIONAL. Enrollment: 18 participants (ESTIMATED). Conditions: Autism, Depressed, Depressed Mood. Interventions: BEHAVIORAL: BA-A. Primary outcome measures: Children's Depression Rating Scale, Revised , Baseline, Post-Treatment (i.e., after completion of 12 weekly therapy sessions [typically 12-13 weeks after baseline]), 1-Month Follow-Up (1 month following completion of therapy sessions); Children's Depression Inventory, Second Edition , Baseline, Post-Treatment (i.e., after completion of 12 weekly therapy sessions [typically 12-13 weeks after baseline]), 1-Month Follow-Up (1 month following completion of therapy sessions); Aberrant Behavior Checklist , Baseline, Post-Treatment (i.e., after completion of 12 weekly therapy sessions [typically 12-13 weeks after baseline]), 1-Month Follow-Up (1 month following completion of therapy sessions); Behavioral Activation for Depression Scale-Short Form , Baseline, Post-Treatment (i.e., after completion of 12 weekly therapy sessions [typically 12-13 weeks after baseline]), 1-Month Follow-Up (1 month following completion of therapy sessions); Acceptability of Intervention Measure , Post-Treatment (i.e., after completion of 12 weekly therapy sessions [typically 12-13 weeks after baseline]); Intervention Appropriateness Measure , Post-Treatment (i.e., after completion of 12 weekly therapy sessions [typically 12-13 weeks after baseline]); Feasibility of Intervention Measure , Post-Treatment (i.e., after completion of 12 weekly therapy sessions [typically 12-13 weeks after baseline]). Brief summary: Autism spectrum disorder is characterized by differences in social communication/interaction and the presence of restricted/repetitive behaviors, with significant heterogeneity in terms of autistic features, language ability, and cognitive characteristics. About 2-3% of individuals in the United States are autistic, and most autistic individuals have co-occurring mental health conditions. Autistic people are 3-4 times more likely to experience depression than non-autistic people. Of the emerging depression treatment research with autistic people, none to date has focused on developing and testing a depression treatment for autistic youth with below average cognitive abilities - a group which comprises over 50% of the autistic community. Therefore, this study seeks to evaluate the feasibility (Aim 1), acceptability (Aim 2), and preliminary treatment effects (Aim 3) of an extension of Behavioral Activation for Depression in Autistic Adolescents (BA-A), adapted to meet the needs of cognitively lower functioning autistic youth.
